Wren Cottage

Forming part of a row of historic cottages in the pretty village of Bamburgh, Wren Cottage is a disarmingly pretty retreat for a stay spent exploring this equally unforgettable Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Situated in the centre of the village with views towards the iconic castle, it’s ideal for both busy holidays spent out and about and quiet coastal breaks spent decompressing from everyday life.

Enter the cottage through the rear door beyond the garden, where an inner hall provides a hanging rail for drying coats and plenty of space for storing sandy boots. The bright and contemporary kitchen lies next door and features pebble-white cabinets offset by sage-green walls, while a sash window above the sink looks out across the multi-level garden where you’ll find a lawn and patio seating to be enjoyed on sunny days.

The cottage is laid out entirely on one floor with the living room situated at the front of the cottage. Inviting blue sofas are complemented by a patterned ottoman and matching cushions and two romantic lancet windows which look out into the village – although the true centrepiece is the original stone inglenook fireplace which now houses a warming log burner. A round wooden dining table and four chairs are set in a nook at the side of the room, creating a lovely spot to enjoy your meals.

The first bedroom is also located at the front of the cottage and enjoys more of those feature lancet windows. Beautifully styled with soft-pink walls, a botanical-patterned headboard behind the king size bed, and ample scatter cushions and cosy throws, it’s a restful haven imbued with the perfect measure of whimsy. The second bedroom lies at the rear of the cottage, looking out onto the garden, and is home to a single bed surrounded by sky-blue walls which are elevated by playful, red-striped textiles. Both bedrooms are served by the family bathroom, where a rainforest shower is joined by a separate bath which is perfect for warming up after bracing beach walks.

As well as simply relaxing in this cosy cottage, there’s plenty to fill your days in Bamburgh and the surrounding area. Take in the dramatic views from the ramparts of Bamburgh Castle, walk for miles along the pristine sandy beach, or enjoy delicious lunch at the Bamburgh Walled Garden Café – where a play park is perfect for entertaining little ones. For day trips, head a little further afield and discover the intriguing history of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just north of Bamburgh, or the popular village of Seahouses that lies just to the south, where regular boat trips set out to spot seals and puffins on the Farne Islands.
