Westwood Cottage has been recently renovated to provide comfortable accommodation for up to six guests with highlights including a well-appointed kitchen, contemporary bathrooms, a handmade Roast Chandelier and local artwork from artists such as Kirsten Boston.

The cottage sits in a large garden with an outside dining area and attractive views across open farmland to Arthur’s Seat and the Pentland Hills in the distance. There is excellent walking from the front door around farm tracks, as well as numerous waymarked routes.

Westwood Cottage is very well-positioned for exploring East Lothian’s stunning coast. Longniddry beach, just a mile from the cottage, is one of the best kite surfing spots in Scotland and for families, the stunning sandy beaches of Aberlady and Gullane are both within a 15-minute drive. Gullane is also home to the renowned Bonnie Badger pub, created by chef Tom Kitchin.

There is an excellent array of activities for families nearby, including Archerfield Walled Garden and Fairy Trail, the Museum of Flight, Dalkeith Country Park, East Links Family Park and Foxlake water park, slightly further afield.

Scotland’s famous golf coast is on the doorstep, with the internationally renowned courses of Gullane, Muirfield and North Berwick all within a 10-mile radius. Longniddry also has a well-regarded 18-hole links course.

Westwood Cottage is exceptionally well-positioned to explore Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Festivals, taking a 20-minute train ride from Longniddry station, just a mile from the house.

Location

Longniddry is a rural picturesque village set in the heart of East Lothian countryside making it a good base to explore the region. There is a small Co-op supermarket and Village Shop in the centre of the village, as well as a pharmacy, post office and a couple of coffee shops/cafes.

Haddington is the closest town (6 miles) with more extensive shopping and larger supermarkets. You'll find an excellent selection of grocers, wine shops, florists and butchers sitting alongside charming gifts and clothes shops, and craft galleries. Here, you can relax and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes, delicatessens or tea rooms in the town including The Loft for fabulous artisan breads and oven-fresh produce. The Waterside Bistro is very good, as is the Cottage Garden Kitchen which is very special (booking essential).

There is also a Farmers' Market in Haddington, held on the last Saturday of every month (9am-1pm), selling a wide variety of local produce presented in an inspiring and innovative way.

Gifford village is close by (9 miles) with the Lanterne Rouge cafe, which is particularly welcoming to cyclists, and Lewis and Clark Artisan Kitchen with freshly baked goods and local artisan products. You will also find a warm welcome at the Goblin Ha pub and the Tweeddale Arms Hotel.

For more elegant dining, head to La Potinière at Gullane (7 miles) or try Tom Kitchin's restaurant, The Bonnie Badger; a fabulous 5 star AA restaurant using locally sourced produce washed down with artisan beers and wines from an impressive selection. The owner's personal favourite is The Old Clubhouse in Gullane, which has gained a considerable reputation for good food and wine, and excellent Scottish hospitality, stretching far beyond the bounds of East Lothian.

East Linton (11 miles) has a good variety of local shops and excellent pubs, while the Crown and Kitchen comes highly recommended for classic Scottish dishes with a modern twist. It also has an award-winning butcher if you plan on having a BBQ.

Dunbar is not too far away (14.5 miles) and is home to the award-winning Creel Restaurant, serving delicious seafood, and Belhaven Fruit Farm has a great deli, café, and Gin Bar, as well as pick-your-own berries during the summer season.

Longniddry train station is five minutes by car, offering easy access into the centre of Edinburgh.
