Description

The medieval town of Alnwick is one of the most prized destinations in northern England, celebrated for its 11th-century castle, spectacular Alnwick Garden, atmospheric town, and proximity to delightful coastal and rural villages such as Alnmouth and Lesbury.

Set on the southern corner of Alnwick Garden (just a few yards from the legendary Barter Books second-hand book shop, which is set in a former Victorian railway station and spawned the renaissance of the now ubiquitous WW2 Keep Calm and Carry On slogan ), The Woodworker's Cottage (a version of The Craftsman's Cottage for fewer guests)places all of Alnwick’s key attractions within 10 minutes’ walk. Guests can stroll along the town’s cobbled streets, admire the Grand Cascade waterfall, visit the world-famous Poison Garden, and visit the magical play village of Lilidorei within the grounds of Alnwick Gardens and, of course, relive the magic of Harry Potter at Alnwick Castle. Hulne Park's stunning woodland trails across the Duke's land are also not to be missed.

Cottage is arguably something of a misnomer when it comes to The Woodworker’s Cottage, which comprises spacious living areas and four generous bedrooms for you to choose two from upon booking. Stepping through the sunny yellow front door brings you into a light-filled hall with a large sitting room to your right, entered through double glass doors. Two windows, both with window seats, overlook the gentle bustle of Alnwick while a striking stone fireplace, beautiful antique furniture and a discrete television set an elegant yet relaxed tone.

Follow the hallway through to the dining area, which is set by full-height glass windows and a door that leads out onto a small patio. From here, you can head into the country kitchen, complete with lime-washed timber beams and a fabulous old brick fireplace containing a wood-burner, or towards a pretty ensuite bedroom, which benefits from direct access to the patio. Cleverly, the kitchen can be accessed from both the dining area and the sitting room, achieving a lovely sense of flow and convivial vibe throughout the ground floor.

Just outside the kitchen and dining area, a striking timber and black-painted steel spiral staircase curls upwards, ushering guests to the impressive master bedroom. Beneath whitewashed timber beams and illuminated by a double window with window seats, you’ll find a sumptuous antique bed, an inviting seating area and ensuite bathroom with shower. After a long day’s broomstick training at Alnwick Castle, when only a bath will do, there’s a family bathroom on this floor as well, in addition to a twin bedroom. A further double bedroom is located on this floor. Take your pick when choosing this reduced occupancy version of The Craftman's Cottage (sleeps 6+2).

Location

Situated in the beautiful countryside of north Northumberland, the medieval market town of Alnwick lies within easy reach of the coast and is home to world-class visitor attractions.

A stronghold of Northern power in the Middle Ages, the magnificent Alnwick Castle has more recently served as a filming location for Harry Potter. Alongside this lies The Alnwick Garden with its famous cherry blossom trees, collection of poisonous plants and Grand Cascade. The twisting cobbled streets of the town boast an eclectic collection of independent shops including Barter Books, a famous second-hand bookshop with a miniature train running atop its bookcases, plus there’s a market every Saturday and a Farmers' Market on the last Friday of every month.

Set within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the sea is just a short drive away, as are the dramatic castle and beach at Bamburgh, the charming fishing village of Craster, and the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne across the causeway. A little further inland, you’ll find endless scenic walks in the Cheviot and Simonside Hills and along Hadrian’s Wall, as well as the pretty village of Glanton and the picturesque Ingram Valley.
