Description

Dating back to the 13th century, this former medieval pele tower, with historic ties to the Howick Estate and the Grey family of Northumberland, combines centuries of character with contemporary comfort.

Resting between the historic market town of Alnwick and the charming fishing village of Craster, The Pele Tower enjoys an enviable coastal setting and is well placed for exploring the scenic surrounding countryside. Set only a few miles from Sugar Sands beach, it’s nestled along a private drive and surrounded by lush herbaceous borders, mature woodland and rolling countryside.

An inviting open plan kitchen lies at the heart of the home, featuring deep navy cabinetry, smart white countertops and a spacious dining table seating up to eight guests – ideal for lingering suppers and convivial evenings. Flooded with natural light from the dual-aspect windows, the space feels bright and airy with views overlooking the surrounding countryside to the north. Meanwhile, the central island unit creates a pleasant spot to gather and plan the day ahead.

A restful retreat, the living room features a mix of contemporary furnishings and period character. Layered with richly patterned pillows, the sumptuous corner sofa anchors the space whilst the cosy wood burner adds warmth and ambience – perfect for rainy afternoons with a good book or evenings by the fire. Elegant wall sconces and ceramic table lamps enhance the room’s inviting atmosphere, with an eclectic mix of artwork and prints adding an element of interest.

The first of three king size bedrooms can be found on the ground floor with en suite bathroom and rainforest shower, while a further two bedrooms and the family bathroom are upstairs. Each decorated in a cohesive colour palette of soft neutrals, the bedrooms are home to photographic prints of the surrounding region and its resident wildlife. Tucked in one of the upstairs bedrooms, an original open fireplace adds a sense of history, its intriguing inscription pays reference to the home’s owners in the 17th century, Edward and Mary Roddam.

Outside, the sun-soaked patio is the perfect spot for alfresco dining with picturesque views over the rolling countryside. An elegant setting for picnics or games, relax on the large private lawn to the rear of the property or visit the stunning gardens and arboretum at Howick Hall, where guests of The Pele Tower can enjoy complimentary access.
