Turn the corner into this steading with its vibrant blue livery and you are drawn by the fantastic combination of rustic wood cladding which reveals the contours of the stonework of the original building.

Surrounded by a private courtyard, the access door is framed by mature olive trees with outside seating, including an atmospheric firepit which you can load up with seasoned logs for toasted marshmallows, or the simple enjoyment of togetherness and a spot of star gazing.

Step inside and the look is quintessentially country with evocative wallpapers such as the 'Tree and Cow', and 'Pigeon and Clocktower' by illustrator Edward Bawden, stunningly reproduced by printmaker St. Jude’s as part of their studio archive range. The overall look is a modern twist on the arts and crafts movement balanced beautifully against the simplicity of furnishings with exceptional styling and design at its core - the Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson bookcase a wonderful example.

A bright inner hall with desk is a perfect spot when work beckons, leading into an open plan country kitchen which exudes a welcome calm with dining area in sunshine yellow and the craftsmanship showing through the mellow oak finishes. This leads into a ground floor boot room and cloakroom, leading out to a courtyard and a separate games room with ping pong table.

Upstairs are two atmospheric bedrooms divided by a family bathroom, layering textures and a rich heritage colour palette which say peace and tranquility.

The Grieves House sits in the centre of Fountainhall Estate with lovely quiet walks to nearby Glenkinchie Distillery and the village of Pencaitland which are both 1.5 miles from the property.

The small village of Pencaitland has a small Spar store for everyday essentials, a small pub called the Winton Arms, a post office and a petrol station. The Glenkinchie Distillery offers some excellent whisky tasting and distillery tours. East Coast Organics also sits nearby who can deliver a delicious box of fresh organic produce direct from the farm for the start of your stay.

Extensive shopping and amenities can be found in Haddington (7 miles) where you will find an excellent selection of grocers, wine shops, florists and butchers sitting alongside charming gift, clothes shops and craft galleries. Here, you can relax and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes, delicatessens or tea rooms in the town including The Loft for fabulous artisan breads and oven-fresh produce. The Waterside Bistro is very good, as is the Cottage Garden Kitchen which is very special. Booking essential. Look out for The Big Blu mobile van with its own wood-fired oven for delicious authentic pizza.

The Restoration Yard Store and Café in the heart of Dalkeith Country Park (8 miles) is also a top spot for a relaxed lunch and a spot of retail therapy, while children can enjoy some devilish exploits in the Fort Douglas Adventure Park.

For more elegant dining, head to La Potinière at Gullane (13 miles) for delicious seafood and award-winning cuisine or Tom Kitchin's restaurant 'The Bonnie Badger' which is a fabulous 5 star AA restaurant using locally sourced produce washed down with artisan beers and wines from an impressive selection.

Hop on the train from Prestonpans (8 miles) and a 15 minute journey will take you into the centre of Edinburgh where you can explore the fascinating architecture of the old town and soak-up the culture and heritage of this beautiful vibrant city.
