Description

Surrounded by patchwork fields and rolling hills, this elegant retreat has been lovingly crafted from a historic barn which once stood in its stead. Melding its honey-coloured stone with an interior style rooted in understated luxury, it’s a beautifully calm place in which to unwind and access the very best of the region – whether travelling with a loved one or simply savouring the peace and quiet of your own company.

The open plan living space lies beneath a vaulted ceiling crossed with original wooden beams. A soft leather sofa and cosy armchair are joined by a contemporary log burner which bathes the room in a warm crackling glow in the evening. To the rear of the cottage, the thoughtfully designed kitchen combines marble countertops with brass fittings and midnight blue cabinets. Floor-to-ceiling folding doors open out to the landscape beyond, filling the room with sunlight and allowing you to spill out onto the patio on warmer days.

The equally stylish bathroom lies opposite the main entrance, complete with silver-grey stone tiles and a spacious rainforest shower. The rugged beauty of the original building is foregrounded through characterful details, from the exposed stonework bordering the bedroom door to the beamed and vaulted ceiling above a wall of stone within. This rustic quality is elevated by clean modern touches, such as the powder-blue panelling, warm wooden furniture, and subtle textiles. With views out to the bucolic farmland through the window, it’s a restful room which promises a restorative night’s sleep.

Outside, the table and chairs on the patio create an idyllic spot to settle down with a book when the sun is shining. A fenced lawn stretches down the hill from the cottage while the village cricket green and pastureland lie beyond – occasionally visited by flocks of sheep as they wander through from the neighbouring farm.

It’s an easy walk to the nearest pub in the pretty village of Chatton, The Percy Arms, where you’ll find Sunday roasts and an array of local ales. Set within easy reach of the sea and Northumberland’s remote hills, the cottage is also ideally placed for you to make the most of the region’s coast and country. A half hour drive will take you to the dramatic Bamburgh Castle above its namesake sandy beach, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, and Alnwick with its stunning castle and gardens. Meanwhile, walkers are sure to enjoy the endless trails through the river valleys, wild waterfalls, and rugged moorland of the Northumberland National Park.
