A leather Chesterfield sofa and canvas chairs gather around the decorative gramophone, while the large wooden table with seating for six lies in the centre of the space, creating the perfect setting for an atmospheric dinner party. The kitchen also features breakfast bar seating, a large fridge, and a four-burner gas hob so you can prepare your meals with ease.
There are two bedrooms off the main living space, the first fitted with a four-poster double bed in a bespoke wooden frame, and the second complete with a double bed with a ladder leading up to a single bunk bed above. Next door, the bathroom includes a contemporary shower and heated towel rail. True to the slow-living ethos, there’s no Wi-Fi or TV available, however mobile reception and 4G are generally good so you can keep in touch with the outside world as much or as little as you’d like.
Outdoors, you’re free to explore the wider landscape which extends down to the river of Whiteadder Water and a Community Orchard, creating a dog-friendly route which is perfect for a dip and leg-stretch. Should the nearby Hayloft be available, you’ll have the option to book the wellness suite and sauna as well as yoga classes, massages, and guided meditations directly with the owner. You’re also welcome to rent stables and bring your horses along with you by separate arrangement with the owner, should you like to explore the trails on horseback.
Diverse wildlife thrives here, from short-eared owls and kingfishers to sparrowhawks and ospreys – as well as lots of pheasants and grouse, of course. The small village of Cranshaws is situated just four miles from the border with East Lothian, where the pretty village of Gifford is home to excellent shops and cafés, with the capital city of Edinburgh located about an hour’s drive away. There are countless trails for hiking, cycling, and horse riding in this area, including two long-distance paths that cross the beautiful Lammermuir Hills – the historic Southern Upland Way and the Herring Road which runs all the way to the coastal town of Dunbar.
