Description

Enviably located right in the middle of the pretty village of Bamburgh, Rose Cottage is the ideal base for a stay spent exploring this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Set on the central street which leads from St Aidan’s Church – the burial place of Victorian heroine Grace Darling – towards the towering castle, it’s simultaneously right in the middle of things and perfectly peaceful.

Enter the cottage through its juniper-green front door into the open-plan living space. With original exposed beams and a palette of ocean blues and pebble greys, the living area has a contemporary coastal theme and is warmed by a toasty wood burner and the soft accents of woollen throws. The well-equipped kitchen and dining space lies beyond this, as well as a handy boot room for drying paws and storing outdoor gear. From here, French doors lead out to a small private courtyard extending through an archway into an enclosed lawned garden.

The cottage is laid out entirely on one floor and the first of two bedrooms is situated to the right of the living area. Bright and airy and home to a king size bed, it also enjoys an ensuite bathroom with a combined bath and shower next door. The second bedroom lies at the rear of the cottage, with a double bed which can also be configured as twins and an ensuite bathroom with a spacious shower.

As well as simply unwinding in this cosy retreat, there’s plenty to fill your days in Bamburgh and the surrounding area. Take in the dramatic views from the ramparts of Bamburgh Castle, walk for miles along the pristine sandy beach, or enjoy a picnic of fresh lobster rolls in the dunes in the warmer months. For day trips, head a little further afield and discover the intriguing history of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just north of Bamburgh, or the popular village of Seahouses that lies just to the south, where regular boat trips set out to spot seals and puffins on the Farne Islands.

Located in Bamburgh village, there are Windley (sleeps 4), Kingfisher Cottage (sleeps 2+2), Grove House (sleeps 4), Curlew Cottage (sleeps 2+2), Sandhills (sleeps 3), St Aidan's Lodge (sleeps 4) and Wren Cottage (sleeps 3).

Location

Guarded by the iconic Bamburgh Castle which rises from its volcanic promontory with an almost mythic authority, this charming village combines the best of Northumbrian hospitality with a stretch of coastline with AONB status. Miles of stunning white sands stretch beneath the castle, from which you can take in views of the wildlife-rich Farne Islands and the fascinating Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Perfect for long dog walks, games, or quiet reflection, it's no wonder this is one of the most beloved beaches in the country.

You can enjoy fantastic fresh seafood at several restaurants in the village, perhaps during a relaxed brunch or with a takeaway from the Walled Garden Café, while the numerous tearooms and ice-cream shops are perfect for afternoon treats. There are also several great pubs for cosying up by the fire with a drink in the evening.

The whole area is bursting with things to do, dotted by a trail of castles and fortifications interspersed with pretty seaside villages all the way up and down the coast. For day trips, why not cross the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to trace the legend of St Cuthbert, explore The Alnwick Garden, or take a boat trip from Seahouses to spot puffins and seals in the outstanding Farne Islands nature reserve and seabird sanctuary.
