With a history stretching back to 1405, Grade I listed Netherwitton Hall was built in 1685 and has remained in the same family ever since. Located in the heart of the county between the Northumberland National Park and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Range Cottage is a sophisticated hideaway in the grounds of the Hall. Guests are invited to enjoy the finest elements of this remarkable region. Look forward to days spent exploring the area or setting out on peaceful walks across the Estate, keeping an eye out for the resident red squirrels as they dart amongst the mature trees.
Range Cottage is the end property in a row of three, situated beside the garden to the rear of the Hall. Enter the cottage through the front door into a boot room with space for coats and outdoor gear. This leads to a small, thoughtfully designed inner hall, with a generous desk and discreet storage below. While perfect as a practical workstation, this space also lends itself beautifully to entertaining – transforming into an elegant setting for serving drinks. A patterned rug and a colourful ikat blind add a vibrancy to the colour palette.
Up a few steps, you’ll find a spacious and well-equipped kitchen, with cabinets painted in Lake Red gloss and a cosy dining space seating four guests - the perfect spot for socialising over a delicious home-cooked meal. A traditional split stable door opens onto a private and enclosed rear garden, ideal for warmer summer days.
Off the inner hall lies the sitting room, which is centered around a beautifully preserved historic range. Although decorative, this striking focal point brings a sense of warmth, charm and heritage to the room. Unwind on the double sofa, the snuggler armchair, or a further two leather armchairs which are elevated with rich velvet and suzani patterned cushions. To the side, a carpeted staircase leads to an upper landing with access to the two bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms.
The master bedroom features a king size bed dressed in crisp white linens and a delicately patterned quilt. With sloped ceilings, traditional wooden beside tables and botanical print wallpaper from Jane Churchhill, the room has an inviting country elegance. Flowing from the bedroom, the en suite shower room is decorated in Yeabridge Green, with a tiled walk-in rainforest shower.
The second bedroom is home to a super king size bed which can be configured as twin beds on request. The bedroom feels both inviting and effortlessly stylish, with accents of soft pink and blue. Next door, you’ll find the second en suite bathroom, with a three-quarter bath and a shower mixer tap.
Range Cottage benefits from a fully enclosed private garden and terrace, with table, chairs and a gas barbecue. This is perfect for relaxing, entertaining and alfresco dining, with a large, well-maintained lawn and carefully planted herbaceous borders.
Netherwitton and Longwitton Estate comprises 5,200 acres, including 1,000 acres of carefully managed forestry, and is firmly focused upon responsible, sustainable stewardship and conservation. A variety of environmental schemes are in place, including Woodland Creation schemes and a Countryside Stewardship scheme which promotes red squirrel conservation and habitat development. Although the Hall itself and the Walled Garden are private to the owners, guests are more than welcome to explore the wider Estate and are provided with a selection of maps of recommended walking routes.
There is also plenty to keep you occupied further afield, whether that’s visiting the nearby National Trust properties of Wallington and Cragside, or the historic sites of Hadrian’s Wall, Alnwick Castle and Garden, Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, all of which are under an hour’s drive away. Walkers can look forward to exploring the unspoilt Simonside Hills, the Cheviots, and Kielder. The designated walking routes along St Oswald’s Way and the Northumberland Coast Path are both within easy striking distance. The landscape is sure to delight wildlife-spotters and walkers.
