Once part of the mill and steading which served Haggerston Castle — whose few ruins sit a mile to the north — this semi-detached property still retains a rustic feel courtesy of its mottled stone exterior and rural location near Beal.
Inside, however, a refurbishment has brought lots of wood, lots of light, lots of space, and lots of interior style via open-plan design, splashes of greenery and well-chosen fabrics.
With both bedrooms able to become twins, Mill Cottage can sleep one couple or two, four platonic friends or a small family with equal ease (two dogs are also welcome). Spread out spaciously in the eaves with Velux windows, those two comfy chambers share a bathroom and its corner rainfall shower unit and heated towel rails.
Downstairs the kitchen bursts with amenities, including a Nespresso machine, and neighbours the round, four-person dining table. Lent brightness by its full-length picture window, a short corridor leads through to the sitting room, whose pair of navy-blue sofas, console table and 55-inch Smart TV surround a log burner. You may not need that, however, given the indulgent underfloor heating present across this floor.
French windows open onto the patio, where an outdoor dining table and a charcoal barbecue enable al-fresco eating. South-facing to ensure much sunshine, the lawned garden beyond is fenced to provide privacy.
Can you taste some salt in the air? That’ll be because Mill Cottage is just a short drive or pedal from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and its vanishing causeway. Also within easy reach are golden-sand beaches such as Cheswick Sands and bewitching Bamburgh Castle, soaring on its crag less than ten miles to the south. The A1 passes nearby, as well, making it easy to explore more of Northumberland’s coast (with ample parking for three cars). You really won’t be short of options for days out!
ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION
