Description

Surrounded by the quintessential pastoral scenery of rural East Lothian, this detached and dog-friendly cottage enjoys picturesque views as well as easy access to some of the most popular coastal towns in the Scottish Lowlands. North Berwick is little more than a 15-minute drive away, while the sandy beaches of Gullane, Yellowcraig and Tyninghame are equally enticing for day trips. On returning to Luggate Lodge, the beautiful panorama encompassing the Lammermuir Hills and Traprain Law is best appreciated from the comfort of the enclosed garden, where a weeping willow shades the lawn beside an inviting table and chairs.

Hewn from the unmistakable red sandstone of East Lothian, this nineteenth-century gate lodge has been modernised with cosy interiors which are filled with warm textiles and pops of colour. The front porch has space to store walking boots and raincoats, leading into an inner hall and a living room which lies off to the left. The living room is bright and airy in the daytime, thanks to the double-aspect windows which look out over the garden and open countryside, as well as a snug place to hunker down by the log burner in the evening on the large double sofa and armchairs.

The dining table and chairs for four are placed beneath a window at the side of the living room and the modern kitchen is situated on the opposite side of the cottage. Inside, sage-green panelled walls join wooden cabinets and a window overlooking the countryside, while modern appliances - including a Nespresso coffee machine - ensure cooking is a breeze during your stay.

When sleep calls, the cottage’s two relaxing bedrooms can be found up three steps from the inner hall. The first features walls clad with beautiful robin’s egg-blue panelling, complemented by pink and patterned textiles and an antique chest of drawers. Next door, the second bedroom includes two single beds with striped upholstered headboards and warm woollen throws. Both bedrooms share a stylish family bathroom, complete with a spacious combined bath and shower and walls decorated with botanical artworks.

Outside, the enclosed cottage garden is the ideal place to enjoy relaxed morning coffees or evening meals in the summertime. The lawn is enclosed for the safety of four-legged friends and a tap at the side of the property is perfect for washing off muddy paws. Lovers of the outdoors will find no end of walking and cycle paths to explore on the doorstep of Luggate Lodge, while plenty of activities and attractions can also be discovered just a short drive away – from blissful East Lothian beaches to world-renowned championship links golf courses.

Location

The nearest village of East Linton (2.9 miles) has a small Co-op supermarket, newsagents, and Farm Shop at The Mart, which sells a wide range of locally sourced, high quality produce. Plus, there's a lovely cafe there too to refuel before browsing their gift shop or craft fair held on Saturdays and Sundays each week. Also worth visiting is Bostock Bakery for their wonderful bread, pastries, cakes and coffee - but get there early, as there's often a queue, but it's definitely worth waiting in line for.

Extensive shopping and amenities can be found in Haddington (6.5 miles) where you will find an excellent selection of grocers, cafes, delis, wine shops, florists and butchers sitting alongside charming gift, clothes shops and craft galleries. Or try The Loft for fabulous artisan bread and oven-fresh produce.

For more elegant dining, head to Gullane (13.9 miles) for delicious seafood and award-winning cuisine at La Potinière, or the fabulous 5 star AA restaurant of Tom Kitchin, The Bonnie Badger, which uses locally sourced produce and serves artisan beers and wines from an impressive selection. North Berwick (8.9 miles) has a vast array of options and The Glenkinchie Distillery (13.7 miles) offers some excellent whisky tasting and distillery tours.

Hop on the train at Dunbar and a 25-minute journey will take you into the centre of Edinburgh where you can explore the fascinating architecture of the old town and soak up the culture and heritage of this beautiful, vibrant city.
