Harwood sits in a wonderfully secluded setting in the heart of one of Northumberland’s great forests yet remains within easy reach of some of the county’s most characterful market towns, historic houses and sweeping coastline.
To the north-west, Rothbury – around 19 miles from Harwood – is one of Northumberland’s most picturesque market towns. Set amongst rolling hills and crossed by the gentle River Coquet, it has independent shops, cosy tearooms and traditional pubs. Nearby, Cragside House and Gardens, the extraordinary former home of Victorian inventor Lord Armstrong, offers enchanting woodland walks, dramatic landscapes and a fascinating glimpse into pioneering Victorian ingenuity.
Closer still, the magnificent Wallington Hall is one of the county’s finest National Trust properties, with grand interiors, beautiful walled gardens and extensive parkland and woodland trails to explore. Perfect for leisurely afternoons, it provides a wonderful day out for all ages.
Harwood is 14 miles from Morpeth, an elegant riverside town sitting just south of Northumberland National Park. Centred around its handsome high street and the winding banks of the River Wansbeck, Morpeth offers an appealing mix of independent boutiques, cafés, restaurants and historic buildings, alongside scenic riverside walks and a relaxed pace of life.
For those drawn outdoors, the surrounding landscape offers endless opportunities for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting, from the heather-clad Simonside Hills to the vast open beauty of Northumberland National Park.
