Positioned alongside a historic water mill, you can simply switch off from the bustle of life and embrace this rural escape.
As soon as you arrive at Garden Cottage, you’ll note the attention to detail and the inspired design touches that flow throughout this interior. The open-plan living space forms the heart of this beautiful cottage and is generously proportioned, with plenty of room to enjoy cooking and dining together before curling up in front of the wood-burning stove to watch a movie. Sliding doors open onto the patio, where you’ll find garden furniture for al fresco meals, with a step leading to the fenced garden beyond, and this creates a lovely indoor-outdoor flow of space on warmer days.
The kitchen features Shaker-style cabinetry in a dove grey hue, with marbled worktops, complemented by oak dining furniture for a classic-contemporary look. Colourful rugs and patterned textiles and lampshades add pops of colour and personality to this open-plan space, alongside understated neutrals in the furniture. The wood-burner offers a cosy focal point alongside the relaxed seating, while the ceiling-height bookcase is filled with titles to browse, so you can light the stove (logs are provided from wood felled on the Fallodon estate) and curl up with a book if the weather shifts.
Indeed this interior has been designed with outdoor adventures in mind as the large hallway offers storage space to offload boots and coats, and it’s also the perfect spot to wipe down any canine companions – two dogs are welcome here.
Accessed from the living space, the bedroom features an elegant upholstered bed, and the warm, neutral colour palette is punctuated by sophisticated textiles, accessories and artworks, creating a sumptuous haven. There is informal fishing available on the lake which is stocked with trout and is ideal for family and friends who wish to dabble. There are also wild brown trout in the burn. It is on a catch-and-release basis and there is no charge.

Long Byre, Swallow Dean, Brunton Lake, Brunton Burn and Mill Race cottages form part of a renovated farm steading in that order going clockwise around the courtyard. Brunton Granary adjoins Brunton Burn at the rear. Garden Cottage sits close to the steading while Brunton House and Stable Cottage sit on the opposite side of the burn.
