Eucalyptus Cottage

Located in the village of Laverton – around six miles from Ripon on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park – Eucalyptus Cottage is a cosy and characterful base for those in search of a little country quiet. Named after the grand old eucalyptus tree which stands nearby, this semi-detached hideaway combines rustic warmth with all the pastoral beauty of its natural surroundings.

Inside, a flagstone entrance hall is home to coat hooks and an antique writing desk which lies below the staircase. The hall leads to a galley-style kitchen set beneath characterful wooden beams which reflect its long history. The open plan living and dining room, which overlook the leafy gardens to the rear of the cottage, can be found down a small step where more aged beams accompany eclectic patterned furnishings and a welcoming wood burner. The large wooden dining table can seat up to eight and is situated beside the large arched window which bathes the room in light – as perfect for slow brunches on weekend mornings as it is fire-warmed suppers on winter evenings.

The bedrooms can be found upstairs, in addition to a single bed and wardrobe which are tucked away in a nook on the landing, as well as a small WC. Both bedrooms feature king size beds and neighbouring ensuite bathrooms, each home to large baths with showers overhead. With warm patterned quilts and botanical artworks, they’re the perfect places to relax after days spent exploring the countryside.

The garden can be accessed through a door in the living room and includes a large enclosed lawn and a small sunken patio area with seating – the ideal spot to make the most of the picturesque surroundings. At the end of the garden, a gate leads to a paddock and miles of local bridleways which will tempt you out on refreshing walks. Paths will lead you to Lumley Moor Reservoir and the village of Grantley, while ambitious hikers will enjoy the ease of access to the circular Ripon Rowel or the shorter Mosaic Trail. The attractions of Harrogate and Masham are also within easy reach, as well as the area’s numerous historic sites, including the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey.
