Description

Newly renovated from top to toe, Coldwells Farmhouse offers comfortable, light and airy accommodation. The attractive stone house sits in an equally attractive spot, surrounded by farmland and with only horses for neighbours. Expect countryside views across fields, a fully enclosed garden and plenty of peace and quiet.

Letting lots of light in, glass doors lead to the airy, contemporary interiors. A generous open-plan area hosts the living areas, including a white-themed modern kitchen in one corner, with a six-person dining table ready for when dinner is served. Minimalist lighting from the high ceilings illuminate polished floorboards, while three large sofas frame the TV when comfort and relaxation beckon.

There’s a king-sized ground-floor bedroom; in keeping with the spacious open-plan living space and level garden access, which may work well for those with limited mobility. The ground-floor bathroom has a walk-in shower and a separate hand-held head in its tub.

Stairs lead up to double and twin bedrooms, fitted in restful, pale hues including striped bedspreads. Their shared bathroom also contains a walk-in shower.

You’re just three miles from the acclaimed Dalkeith Country Park, a 1,000-acre playground that offers extensive walking and cycling routes through parkland or woods, as well as an adventure park and its own Go Ape centre. To cap it all, you will also find superb shopping, dining, and an impressive programme of events throughout the year.

The location is also perfect for exploring the stunning East Lothian coastline and its legendary golf courses, gourmet eats, sandy beaches and chichi villages – not to mention the famous Bass Rock and tourable local whisky distilleries such as Glenkinchie.

Then there’s Edinburgh: less than ten minutes by train from nearby Newcraighall station, which is only eight miles from the farmhouse, especially handy during the month of August when the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is on.

Location

Sitting in a quiet rural steading, Coldwells Farmhouse is well situated to enjoy both the tranquillity of the Scottish countryside, as well as the hustle and bustle of the nearby city and all it has to offer.

The nearest village of Pathhead (2 miles) will provide all the essentials, including a family-run bakery, Post Office and village shop. For larger supermarket shopping, head to Dalkeith (3 miles), and you will also find a pharmacy, additional shops and some restaurants there.

The Restoration Yard and Wellbeing Lab sits within Dalkeith Country Park (3.3 miles) offering great shopping, homeware, food and drink, giftware and more. There is the Fort Douglas Adventure Park to keep children entertained with treehouses, zip wires, suspension bridges, slides and climbing walls. The Coffee Bar and The Kitchen restaurant offer tasty breakfasts, lunches or afternoon tea using fresh, local produce.

The Secret Herb Garden (8.5 miles) is set within an old nursery and serves delicious and seasonal produce, such as soups, quiches and cakes which can be enjoyed in the gardens or in the glasshouse.

Travel into the city centre of Edinburgh (12 miles) for a wide choice of bars, cafés and renowned restaurants. Tom Kitchin’s The Kitchin comes highly recommended (be sure to book in advance), as well as Six by Nico, where you’ll be served six courses from their tasting menu, based around a different theme changing every six weeks. Or, taste what’s in season through the tasting menu at Aizle, then have drinks afterwards in the spectacular setting of The Dome (a must-visit at Christmas time for the incredible display of lights).

It’s better to use public transport when heading into the city, as parking can be tricky, but fortunately, Lothian Buses offer regular services from Eskbank and Dalkeith, or there’s a train station just ten minutes away (Eskbank Station), where you can take a short 20-minute ride to Edinburgh Waverley, right in the centre.
