Description

Nothing lifts the soul like a good sea view — and the one at Captain’s Landing is very, very good. Memorably situated on a 150m-high volcanic plinth, you can even spy Bamburgh Castle itself, to one side of an expanse of ocean in which the Farne Islands are visible on clear days. To make this location even more memorable, the village and its vast white-sand beach are accessible on foot.

Welcoming two dogs, Captain’s Landing occupies the top floor of West House, an impressive Edwardian home, which now houses a small collection exclusive coastal apartments. Regal, and romantic: the spacious but snug interiors blend soft wooden floorboards, plush soft furnishings, shag rugs and dimmable lighting, which conspire to create an amorous atmosphere.

In the open-plan living room, contemporary touches meet original features rendering the space both stylish and cosy. By the large windows a chunky wooden dining table – affording those stellar sea views – sits adjacent to a hammered metal ottoman-style table, generous leather armchairs and a pale corner sofa. In this latter section, an illuminated exposed brick wall with a Smart TV, thick wooden mantlepiece and electric fireplace draws the eye.

That airy kitchen includes an excellent fan oven, a freezer cleverly concealed by bright cabinetry and ambient, under-bench lighting. Just off the kitchen-living room is a small balconette, which overlooks West House’s pretty communal gardens and the neighbouring gardens beyond.

The rest of the apartment comprises a master bedroom with a grand king-sized mahogany bed and gorgeous coastal views from its bay window, a well-presented shower room and a cosy eaves-style twin bedroom, which also features an armchair, two north-facing windows gaze as far as the Cheviot Hills.

Built by the Normans and once host to English kings, beautiful Bamburgh Castle is open to visitors and less than 15-minute’s walk away . That’s via the charming namesake village, where delicatessens, tea rooms, ice cream-serving cafes and the Potted Lobster pub and restaurant await, with Bamburgh Beach slightly further on. A romantic scene unfolds on summer afternoons when cricketers play on a green just below the castle; close by, an unforgettable golf course flanks the fortress.

Further afield, days out might be spent on birdwatching boat trips to the Farne Island, travelling across the causeway to Lindisfarne, exploring market towns, walking to waterfalls, mountain biking around Kielder Forest or trying Craster’s famous kippers.

Additional Accommodation

For guests looking to holiday together, guests can book Captain's Rest located on the ground floor of West House sleeping up to four guests.

Location

Guarded by the iconic Bamburgh Castle which rises from its volcanic promontory with an almost mythic authority, this charming village combines the best of Northumbrian hospitality with a stretch of coastline with AONB status. Miles of stunning white sands stretch beneath the castle, from which you can take in views of the wildlife-rich Farne Islands and the fascinating Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Perfect for long dog walks, games, or quiet reflection, it's no wonder this is one of the most beloved beaches in the country.

You can enjoy fantastic fresh seafood at several restaurants in the village, perhaps during a relaxed brunch or with a takeaway from the Walled Garden Café, while the numerous tearooms and ice-cream shops are perfect for afternoon treats. There are also several great pubs for cosying up by the fire with a drink in the evening.

The whole area is bursting with things to do, dotted by a trail of castles and fortifications interspersed with pretty seaside villages all the way up and down the coast. For day trips, why not cross the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to trace the legend of St Cuthbert, explore The Alnwick Garden, or take a boat trip from Seahouses to spot puffins and seals in the outstanding Farne Islands nature reserve and seabird sanctuary.
