Description

Tucked away on a quiet village street in a truly remarkable location, Cambridge House - Cottage Number Two is a restful and dog-friendly holiday cottage which is the perfect base for a coastal retreat. A tidal island reached via a causeway in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lindisfarne was once a centre of Celtic Christianity whose raiding marked the start of the Viking Age.

Twice a day, for up to seven hours each time, Holy Island is cut off from mainland Northumberland when sea water submerges its sandy causeway. Yet that only adds to the magic of a stay on this two-square-mile speck of land, which has just 180 permanent residents.

Inside, the cottage contains an open-plan living space incorporating a long kitchen with dark navy cabinets, a four-person dining table encircled by contemporary chairs, and a living area complete with an L-shaped sofa and armchair. Decorated with cream paintwork and splashes of colourful textiles, the room has a modern yet cosy atmosphere.

Doors lead straight from the living area out into the garden, where you’ll find a patio with a table and chairs surrounded by fragrant lavender and mature trees. Here you can sit and savour the sun in the morning or share an al fresco meal. The garden is fully enclosed by high wooden fences, making it a safe place for children or dogs to roam and explore.

When sleep calls, both bedrooms contain zip-and-link beds which can be configured as twins or super kings in addition to elegant en suite bathrooms. The first white-tiled bathroom contains a combined bath and shower, while the second enjoys a spacious walk-in shower with a rainforest head.

Relics of the island’s tapestried past wait to be explored on your doorstep, from the ruined Lindisfarne Priory – where the famous Lindisfarne Gospels were produced by Anglo-Saxon monks – to the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle perched on the highest point of the island. Guests here can look forward to unique access to the island’s beaches when the encroaching tide has chased most visitors home, including the coves in the National Nature Reserve which are populated with rare and diverse birdlife.

Cambridge House Cottage Number Two (sleeps 4) can be let in conjunction with Cambridge House (sleeps 8) and Cambridge House Cottage Number One (sleeps 2).

Location

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a fabled location which holds an iconic presence on the Northumberland coastline. Cut off from the mainland twice daily, residents enjoy a true a sense of seclusion and ability to explore the island's beaches and coves long after the majority of visitors have departed. Once home to medieval monks and victim to the first Viking raids on English shores, today it's known for it's fascinating historic sites, golden mead, and diverse birdlife.

In addition to the attractions of Lindisfarne Priory, the Gertrude Jekyll Garden, and Lindisfarne Castle, the island is home to a pretty harbour and several lovely cafés and pubs. For nature lovers, the white sandy beaches, often empty save for seabirds and seals, and the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve are an endless delight. The smaller St Cuthbert's Island, also known as Hobthrush, is accessible by foot at low tide and is another haven for wildlife observation.

Nearby, the coastal villages of Bamburgh and Seahouses are perfect for day trips spent immersed in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Further afield, Berwick-upon-Tweed provides more extensive amenities and rail links to Edinburgh and Newcastle, while venturing a further inland will take you to a huge network of walking trails through the Northumberland National Park and the Scottish Borders.
